Adobe Audition CS5.5 Mastering Tutorial

Adobe Audition CS5.5 is new generation of music producing software. Mastering with Adobe Audition CS5.5 is great experience. In this tutorial I am going to show you how to get studio quality vocals using Adobe Audition CS5.5.
Step 1. Setup recording track

The first thing you must do is to setup yours recording track correctly. That means you must set a MONO recording because mono track is better and easier to produce then stereo track. How to do that?
  1. Run Adobe Audition CS5.5
  2. Click on "Multitrack" mode
  3. Choose track you want record you vocal
  4. Click "Default Stereo Input" and choose MONO device
Step 2. Recording Vocals

Most of you think that the easier part of music making is recording process, well that is not true. Recording vocal is one of most important step in music making. Here are some basic facts you must know before you can learn anything else :
  1. Adjust Microphone Volume to avoid any "extra" and " unwanted" sound
  2. Distance between you and your mic must be minimum 15cm, the optimum is somewhere between 15-20cm
  3. If you are recording in you house make sure that you record you vocals in small room, and avoid any noise like cars, wind or something like that. You just want your vocal recorded not you neighbor.
Step 3. Mastering process

Mastering / Mixing your vocal is second most important step in song making process. No matter if you are rock singer, RnB or hip hop/rap artist you surely want clear and powerful vocal. In this post I am going to walk you trough some of most important effects you must use to get decent vocal quality.

The first effect that you must use is Amplify process. What is amplify process? Amplify process is great way to boost power and volume of your vocal, it is very useful if you using some cheap microphone with poor quality. How to do that?
  1. Record you vocal
  2. Go to "edit mode" or waveform
  3. Click Effects > Amplitude and Compression > Amplify..
  4. Then just choose one of present that fit to your vocal volume

Amplify Process
The next effect you must use is Dynamic Processing. Dynamic processing will give your vocal some really good quality and it is very useful. How to use it?

  1. Click Effects > Amplitude and Compression > Dynamic Processing > Classic Soft knee
  2. Then click on "settings" and mark "Noise gating" (check out screenshot)
Classic Soft Knee

Next effect you must use Graphic Equalizer. Graphic eq is of greatest effect, this one give really nice quality to you vocals. How to use it?
Click Effects > Filter and EQ > Graphic Equalizer (20 Bands) > 20 bands Classic V.

20 Bands Classic V
Next effect is Parametric Equalizer.
Click Effects > Filter and EQ > Parametric Equalizer > Loudness Maximizer

Loudness Maximizer

Next effect you want to use is Reverb. Reverb is great effect if you are using some less quality microphone. Revereb effect will give to your vocal little delay and echo but not too much. How to use it?

Click on Effects > Reverb > Studio Reverb > Vocal Reverb (small)

Studio Reverb (Small)

And Last effect you need to use is Hard Limiting. Hard Limiting will make you vocals at same level ( no pops and pufs). How to use it?

Click Amplify and Compression > Hard Limiting > Light

Hard Limiting

Okay that is for now, this is some simple mastering tutorial please come back because I will introduce to you  some more advanced tutorial that will help you to gain Studio Quality Vocals with Adobe Audition CS5.5.

Can plugins from Cool Edit Pro be moved to Adobe Audition? I prefer some of the presets in the Equalizer settings on CEP. I tried copy-and-paste from the CEP folder to the Audition folder, but I don't see them as choices still. Thanks.

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Well it depends of what kind of plugin you talking about and from which version of cool edit pro you want to move in which version of Adobe Audition??

superflash said...

From Cool Edit Pro 2.1 to Audition 3.0. I like and had gotten used to the GRAPHIC EQUALIZER presets on CEP 2.1. Such as Punch & Sparkle, Simple___Cut/Boost, Gentle___Cut/Boost, etc.

I should have said PRESETS and not plugins.

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

No, you can not do that because Adobe Audition 3.0 is much different then Cool edit pro 2.1. If you like those presents so bad then just continue to work with cool edit pro, or browse my blog for adobe audition mastering settings.

Thank you for sopping by

On Audition CS5.5 I see in Effects VST, but when i mouse over it nothing comes up, and when I click on it nothing happens, so im assuming the VST is empty. and VST is for auto tune and such correct? so where can i aquire auto tune and do i have to pay?

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Of course is empty you must add vst plugins. If you are looking for "T-Pain" effect, you really do not need Auto-tune, GSnap will do the job.

You can Download Gsnap VST for free click link below

I've been gaining a lot of knowledge from your website. I am the previous Anonymous poster back again with yet, another question :) Here it goes:

I'm a rapper, or so I think, and whenever I record with audition and mix my vocals the EXACT same way you did they come out too slow and sound veery weird, but then when I go to cool edit pro 2.0 and just use dynamic processing fast attack and just natural reverb my vocals sound nice, clear, and warm... all i want is just to have CLEAR vocals, the rest i can do, any help I'd gladly appreciate!

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Thank you for stopping by again. Well if these settings from this tutorial do not work for you, that is because you hardware is not quite good, right? But there is solution, try all this settings but without Parametric EQ. The problem that you writing about is very often, and I really understand you.
Please try it this tip, and please notify me did you resolve the problem.

I really appreciate your quick replies!! I will try your tip tomorrow.. and yes maybe it is my hardware... im using a brand new 800 dollar laptop and a brand new 100 dollar usb mic, but my 30 dollar mic sounds better on cool edit pro then my 100 dollar usb mic does on audition so let's see if your suggestion helps, I will respond tomorrow with my results! thank you once again for having the patients to answer my questions ;)

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

No problem bro, I am here to help you :). USB Mics are good, but I prefer standard mic jack, and one more thing, expensive laptop do not mean good record equipment, you must have good quality sound card and some decent quality mic (if you are recording at home), the best solution is to buy 3 things :
1. Quality Sound Card
2. Mixer/Amplifier
3. Decent Quality Mic
All this equipment you can buy for couple hundreds.
Ok, try it out and let me know your results. Peace

OK thanks! you can check some of my music out @ www.youtube.com/losangelesfresh1

Let me know what you think :)

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

I will bro.

Back again, with another question... i got new hardware and such, and am no longer using a USB mic.. i got a audio technica at2035 condenser mic with a PreSonus AudioBox USB interface

when i record with audition my vocals are fine, they cut out here and there a LITTLE but you can hardly notice it, but whenever i use ANY form of dynamic processing my vocals are just cutting in and out and it sounds awful, what is going on?

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Ok bro please contact me private on blogger or my e-mail : mire_fm_jam@hotmail.com. We are going to resolve that problem.

P.S. I heard some of your songs, they are awesome!

Anonymous said...

could you do a one of repeting, like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkYHuL8MdlQ @1:08

or do you just repeat it with your own vocal

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

I can not rap or sing in English language. Sorry :)

I'll try this as soon as i get home. Thanks in advance!

You welcome bro :)

Thank-you so much for this tutorial...I'll be waiting for the more advanced tutorial to get studio quality vocals.
My vocals sounds kind of thin after using all your steps..(i love the result though) but is there any way I can make it thicker? I know there is a preset 'vocal thickner', when do you suggest i use it? before the reverb...or when?

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

I am glad you like it :D. Well I this you should use it before reverb. If you want to use any other effect that I did not mention in this tutorial use it before reverb.

Send me one of your songs :)

My vocal cut in and out when I apply dynamic processing. Can you help?

Anonymous said...

Thank-you for replying! I would really really appreciate it if you could check this clip out and decode it. It is vocals only. It sounds like it has many harmonies. I was wondering how much of it was generated using software and how much was sung. I want to achieve this kind of effect on my vocals.

Im using a samson cou1 condensor mic and adobe audition 3.0 but im getting cs5 soon
PS - the tutorial was awsome!

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

@Anonymus hello! I checked this track you sent me and I must to say you that this is pure software art, also the quality is amazing. I can help you out to get this kind of vocal but please send me your vocals and instrumental on my e-mail address ( mire_fm_jam@hotmail.com)and I will produce it for you.

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

@tobbyy hello and welcome! Well you should mess a lil bit with vocal volume, change it up or down until you get perfect match..

Anonymous said...

Really appreciate your help!! Thank-you! I will definitely send you my files, but the song I want to do needs autotune...will you be produce that too?

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Auto-tune No problem :D

Anonymous said...

Yea, i do that alott but i can never get the sound i want... I know it has something to do with EQ, Compression, and Blah blah but i dont know the rite settings.

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Well bro that is individual problem, cuz I dont know how loud is your instrumental or vocals. Try to use hard limiting process to level all your vocals then just adjust instrumental volume.

Hey bro, when I record my hook/chorus, I like to copy and paste that to the other hooks so they all sound the same. but I can only move my vocals in tiny little increments, I can't just slide them into place however I wish, so this frustrates me because I can't slide a the first hook in to fit the 2nd and 3rd hook without it sounding off. how can I copy and paste vocals and then move them around without being forced to slide them in small increments? thanks!

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Oke the first thing you must do is to select right tool. check out the photo
and see which tool you must use. then just grab your hook with right click and move it where you want to place it, just release the click and you should get option to move it or copy it to that new spot.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the help bro! Only problem is I clicked on the 'photo' link and it says 'Page not found' ? i have adobe audition 4.0 if you could describe what the tool looked like, or where it is to click it im sure i could find it! thanks again bro you're a BIG help!!

hey man I've asked you a few questions before but now I am in a serious emergency! when I record, I only use a few things to edit/mix, dynamic processing, reverb, some compression and hard limiter, when I mix my vocals they should be about an inch tall and perfectly level all the way through, but now when I record and use the same edits as I always have, my vocals come out way big, like over 2 inches, something is seriously wrong and I am completely baffled by this, is it my mic or my program? my settings are on the same settings as well. my vocals are completely off, an answer would seriously help me as I am very poor and cannot afford new equipment at the moment :(

Anonymous said...

Hey im the previous poster, also it seems to be my Speech Volume Leveler is what is really messed up, it's not working like it used to how could this be? I used to use the Soft preset... ? im completely baffled by this, my mic still sounds clear and fine so I dont know whats going on, can Audition controls just go out of whack like this>?? any quick help would be seriously appreciated bro, thanks in advance

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Go to your windows (if you are windows user) and check your micropone input. Or go to your sound card settings and reduce microphone level. Also be sure that distance between you and microphone MUST be 20-30cm.

Cheers

Anonymous said...

lol, that's definitely not my problem is the mic level or the sound card. like i said, when i edit my vocals the program is doing irradical things, i used speech volume leveler and it amplifies the vocals way more than it used to (it used to shrink them actually) and it fucked up the end of my vocal, the first 30 sec's of my vocal were decent at best, but then it REALLY shrunk down the last 10 sec's of the vocal making it sound horrible,.. bro it's definitely not the mic level or anything like that, like i said i've been recording this way for a year now, and now for some reason it's coming out differently. all i am really asking is, is it my program?

Pro Sound And Vocal Editing said...

Why do you use speech volume leveler at first place?? I don`t get it. Try to re-install audition or something like that. (I`ve never heard about problem like that).

Cheers

SHANE said...

Yeah I'm figuring it's my microphone, it's real hot and muggy this time of year and I'm guessing my condenser mic was ruined by all the heat and dust? I dunno, it still sounds pretty clear but it's just not coming out like it used to, I hope it isn't a problem with my USB phantom power interface, I wouldn't think so though.

My last question to you is a noob question, I recently got Adobe Audition CS6, and now all my tracks record to only my left ear, and the track itself is split in the middle and only recording on the upper half.. ? I can adjust it from right ear to left ear but that doesn't help, I can add a new mono track but I don't want to have to add a bunch of mono tracks to start each session, how can I just have it record regularly?? Help would be much appreciated :) I am very glad you run this site for people like me, without you I'd seriously be lost in a lot of areas
