Custom Auto-Motion Patterns‏ In Auto-Tune EFX2

Custom Auto-Motion Patterns‏ In Auto-Tune EFX2

Welcome to the first in our more in-depth looks at Auto-Tune EFX 2's new Auto-Motion™ Vocal Pattern Generation. This time we'll be looking at the process of creating your own custom Auto-Motion Patterns.

Roll Your Own

While Auto-Tune EFX 2 comes with over 65 built-in Auto-Motion patterns in a variety of styles, one of it's most powerful features is the ability to create your own custom patterns. While the process might at first glance seem a bit intimidating, particularly if you're not familiar with standard music notation, it's actually quite simple and, dare we say it, quite a bit of fun.

Here's how:

Auto-Tune EFX 2 Auto-Motion patterns are contained in a file entitled "Patterns.xml" in a standard format called MusicXML. This file can be edited by any application that can open and write MusicXML files. A list of MusicXML-aware applications can be found here. If you don't already have a MusicXML-aware application, you can download the free open source music notation program "MuseScore" here.

- The first step is to locate your Patterns.xml file. It's in different places for different operating systems, so refer to our Auto-Motion Pattern guide here (PDF) for the location of yours.
The "Patterns.xml" file contains all of the patterns available in Auto-Tune EFX 2. When you open it with a MusicXML-aware application, you'll see the patterns displayed as a conductor's score with one pattern per staff. (Although all of the patterns are notated in the key of C Major, their actual pitch is defined by the note of the vocal track at the moment the Trigger button is clicked, along with the currently set Key and Scale.)

-Start by creating a new staff (typically by adding a new "instrument" in your notation program) at the bottom of the score. Where you would normally enter the instrument name, enter instead the name of your pattern. This is the name that will show up in Auto-Tune EFX 2's "Select Pattern" menu.

-Begin creating your pattern on the first beat of the first measure of the new staff. Enter only eighth notes. If you want a note of your pattern to sustain for longer than an eighth note, enter multiple consecutive eighth notes at the same pitch.

If you are not familiar with music notation, don't worry, you can think of the staff as the rows of a pattern sequencer grid and place notes in the general shape of your desired pattern.
Continue placing notes until your pattern is complete. Then save and close the Patterns.xml file, launch your DAW, and instantiate Auto-Tune EFX 2. You'll find your new pattern at the bottom of the Select Pattern menu.
Audition your pattern. If its not exactly what you want, simply reopen your Patterns.xml, edit your pattern as desired and try again.
It's really as simple as that to customize Auto-Tune EFX 2 to ensure that your vocal tracks can always feature your own unique Auto-Motion effects.
